Makoto Fujita

Makoto Fujita is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Tokyo and a leading scientist in supramolecular chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1987. After positions at Chiba University, Institute for Molecular Science (IMS), and Nagoya University, he joined the University of Tokyo in 2002 as a full professor. He is internationally recognized for pioneering "metal-directed self-assembly," where complex molecular structures spontaneously form from metal ions and organic ligands. His innovative research includes the creation of giant hollow complexes and the development of the "crystalline sponge method," which allows for the structural analysis of non-crystalline compounds. His groundbreaking work has earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the Wolf Prize in Chemistry (2018), the Imperial Prize, and the Japan Academy Prize (2019). He also holds the title of Distinguished Professor at IMS and has been appointed as a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2025).
